Alexander Mooney is a Toronto-based critic and programmer.

He is a contributor to Exclaim, Screen Slate, Documentary, In Review Online, Toronto Star, Little White Lies, and MUBI Notebook, and is also author of the column “Replications,” which explores remakes and retellings at In the Mood Magazine. He was awarded the 2024 Telefilm Canada Emerging Critic prize by the Toronto Film Critics Association.

During his final year at U of T he was one of the programmers for the Cinema Studies Student Union (CINSSU), where he curated and introduced public screenings for their Free Friday Films and WTF Wednesday series at Innis Town Hall.

He is especially interested in explorations of sexual repression (bonus points if it’s queers pre-1970) and loves films which plumb the power and pleasure of looking and being looked at, but will happily settle for anything that’s worth looking at in the first place (death to Prestige TV Lighting).
